One fight to keep fighting.

Our elementary school is on the chopping block and could be closed in June. We have a rather small school (under 100 students) and it was on the chopping block two years ago. We were given the promise that we wouldn't have to worry about this again for another seven years (we have five years left on that promise). Our school's model is unique and doesn't not fall in line with other public schools. On the flip side, our school has the 3rd highest test scores in the city and we have 60% low-income or immigrant students. By all "standards" we should have much lower test scores.

Last night we spent three hours with City Council and School Board members. You could tell from the flippant comments by the School Board members they had already made up their minds to reconfigure our school. Our breath was wasted on the School Board members but the City Council members seemed to hear us. We will find out tonight what the "recommendation" will be and then we'll have the next three weeks to make our plea.

I cannot imagine what Maddie will do if she cannot be back in the environment that has given her so much. It isn't just the social aspect, she is truly learning from a diverse group of teachers, students and parents. There is no mold to fit this school into and it is heartbreaking to know we may not have this oasis for our child.
